In June 2009, Peking University will host an exciting four-day conference on Science, Philosophy & Belief. The conference will include major keynote speakers such as Nobel laureate William Phillips, Gerald Gabrielse (George Vasmer Leverett Professor of Physics, Harvard University), and Alvin Plantinga (John A. O’Brien Professor of Philosophy, University of Notre Dame). It will also include presentations by other Chinese and Western scholars. This is the culminating conference of a three-year program for Chinese scholars, Science, Philosophy & Belief.

The evening, keynote sessions, June 16-18, are free and open to the public. Keynote sessions will be delivered in English with simultaneous translation into Chinese. Registration is not required for the evening sessions.

We're sorry, but we have reached our capacity of 150 registrants for the conference proper. We are no longer accepting registrants, but you are still welcome to attend the keynote presentations.

H1N1 Update for Western Participants

31 May 2009

From the US Embassy:

H1N1 INFLUENZA OUTBREAK, UPDATE #1

Embassy Beijing
May 6, 2009

This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens to the latest information regarding human cases of 2009-H1N1 Influenza, sometimes referred to as swine flu.

China has instituted the following procedures for border authorities to screen for the possibility of influenza among passengers on arriving international flights:

1) Flights arriving from affected countries, including the United States, will be segregated at specific gates and passengers will move through specific channels for Health and Quarantine (H&Q) clearance.

2) Prior to disembarking from the aircraft, passengers will be required to complete and submit a H&Q health declaration card, which will be provided by the air carrier.  H&Q officials will collect the cards on board the aircraft or planeside.

3) All customers will be required to process through two separate thermal-scanning checkpoints.  Temperature readings are taken by hand wands or from fixed-position infrared monitors that do not make any contact with the traveler.

Advertising Keynote Lectures

22 May 2009

The evening keynote lectures are free and open to the public. We have an outstanding lineup of speakers. Could all Beijing area participants please print up the advertisement (use link below to download pdf) and give copies to students and professors who might be interested in attending? Also, could students put it on campus bulletin boards (physical and electronic)? Thanks for your kind assistance.

Hanggai

21 May 2009

Hanggai to play at closing banquet. National Public Radio wrote: “With the beat evoking horse hooves thundering over the grasslands, Hanggai’s music hearkens back to the nomad’s way of life.” Check out a recent review of their concert in London: http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/2009/may/20/world-music-hanggai-mamer

Schedule online

15 May 2009

The first draft of the conference schedule is now online. It includes both Western and Chinese presenters and titles. You can find the link to it at our website: www.spb2009.org.

Invitation Not Required

08 May 2009

Several Chinese participants, worried that they have not been permitted to attend the conference, have asked us for a letter of invitation. I want to clarify: you do not need a letter of invitation to attend the conference. If you registered, you are invited and fully welcome to attend. And all registered participants will receive all meals and, if you are outside of Beijing, transportation and room. If you requested a room and there is someone that you wish to room with, please let us know your roommate preference (send request to ekc2@students.calvin.edu). Otherwise, we will assign roommates. Students who have been invited to participate in the pre-conference seminar have already been assigned roommates.
